Rapid Rise for Young Umpire

Marlborough’s Megan Stratford has been a keen umpire for almost as long as she has been playingmstratford2.jpg (17772 bytes) table tennis. Megan was not like most other young players – she took an active interest in umpiring. Winning the Alan and Edna McCullum Cup for Junior Umpire at the Nationals became normal practice for Megan from 2002 to 2006 and she has gone on to becoming first, a Regional Umpire, and more recently a National Umpire.

The ITTF asked for applications from young umpires to be part of a training and examination process which culminates in just nine young umpires from all International Associations who will umpire at the World Youth Olympic Games. Megan, along with Natalie Paterson (Manawatu), put forward her resume to the ITTF selection committee. While Natalie was unfortunately unsuccessful in the selection process Megan is one of just 24 umpires to be chosen to join the programme of umpire education and examination from the Open University of Catalonia with the goal of umpiring in Singapore.

The TTNZ Board congratulates Megan on her success so far and wishes her the best for the remainder of the programme.
